IWD - Catriona Crowe
Catriona Crowe is a Technology Consultant in our Remote Services team.
Service Delivery Manager
As part of International Women’s Day 2023, we’re sharing insights from our team about their experiences, their role models and their goals for inspiring others as, or about, women in tech and business.
How do you feel empowered as a woman in tech/a workplace?
My gender has nothing to do with my passion for technology, my drive to be successful or my abilities. I feel empowered because I have a clear vision of my future and I know I am on the right path.
My future is in my hands, and I know that if I work hard, it will pay off - I don’t give up on my dreams/goals even if I fail first time.
I don’t mind if I don’t fit the mould, I’m more concerned about authenticity; I want to show myself, my team, and our clients the real me and what I have to offer.
Empowering yourself is one thing, but that is not enough on its own; working at a company like Waterstons that empowers their people, allows you to reach your full potential and feel truly valued is true empowerment.
What have you learned from the women you have worked with in your career so far?
The most empathetic people I have met have all been women.
They have the ability to spot issues without being advised of them, to meet people with genuine concern and are willing to go to great lengths to make sure everyone in a team has the support they need. For this reason, I think women play a very important role in team dynamic and morale. The women I have met in my career have proved to me that having a family doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your career - and in fact you can be very successful at both. There are many inspiring people of all genders at Waterstons.
What advice would you give to the next generation of women starting their career?
Follow your heart and don’t doubt yourself! It doesn’t matter if you don’t look/sound/dress/act like the rest of your team.
If you are on an IT course or professional team and worried you have no common interests and won’t fit in, be patient. You don’t need to have common interests to work well in a team, achieve great results together or build strong work relationships and friendships that you can rely on. You will also find that over time you will find common ground even with the most unexpected people.
