Teesside University London Cyber Security Challenge
This October we joined forces with Teesside University London to bring cyber security from the classroom into the ’real world’ with the Teesside University London Cyber Security Challenge.
Delivery Lead - Higher Education
The challenge
Teams of students, armed with cybersecurity tools like Nessus, NMAP, and GoWitness, worked together to tackle a simulated network rife with security gaps.
The objective? To analyse the network, identify vulnerabilities, and propose actionable security solutions. In just a few days, the teams took a deep dive into the network's structure, searching for weaknesses, and ultimately present their findings to a panel of six expert judges.
This challenge was about going beyond the lecture hall and put the students into real-world scenarios they’ll encounter as cyber security professionals, then apply what they learn to break down complex problems, work together, and discover how to make decisions under pressure.
The students had from September 27 to October 2 to come up with their solutions.
The event unfolded in three phases:
- Vulnerability analysis – Teams kicked off by scanning the network to uncover potential security weak spots. With the help of industry-standard tools, they gained hands-on experience identifying vulnerabilities—a critical first step for any cybersecurity pro.
- Architecture review – After digging into the network’s defences, teams analysed the network’s architecture. They inspected LAN diagrams, identified structural weaknesses, and brainstormed ways to tighten up security. This phase showed how crucial a well-thought-out design is to safeguard any network.
- Presentation to the judging panel – Finally, each team stepped up to present their findings. They walked the judges through their methodology, analysis, and security recommendations, all while reflecting on what they learned. Not only did this phase test their technical skills, but it also pushed them to communicate effectively—a skill every cybersecurity professional needs.
Teamwork makes the dream work
At Waterstons we believe collaboration is the key to success and this challenge proved that; not only was it a test of collaboration but problem-solving and adaptability. Students left with a clearer understanding of essential tools and techniques they’ll use in their careers and many more valuable life skills. Whether they end up defending the data of future companies or continuing their studies, every student walked away with new skills, greater confidence, and the thrill of having faced (and fixed!) a real-life cybersecurity threat.
If this or similar is something you’d be interested in doing for your University or school, contact education@waterstons.com and we’d be happy to discuss further.
